Planning Board Member for Three Rivers, Sean Halley, has recently resigned his position at a meeting last Thursday and his remarks are worth examining.
For one, it further confirms the power dynamics at play I speculated about in regards to Councillor Vandyke’s resignation several weeks back. Halley once again emphasized how both Council and the staffs of the City and Province are being disrespected by the Minister’s refusal to ratify the by-law amendments.
It’s his view that “nuts on the internet” have a direct line to the Minister and he should know better than to listen to them.
Since there is no direct polling available, it’s hard to know exactly what percentage of the residents of Three Rivers believe that the Buddhist community is up to no good, but it seems clear that the number has risen up drastically in the last year. It could very well be over half the residents in the area.
To simply dismiss the concerns of these residents as “trolls” or “nuts” draws a sharp parallel to Hillary Clinton and her “deplorables” remark in describing Trump’s base. It shows complete disdain for the very people you are in theory supposed to represent.
It’s also clear that Halley’s views and demeanor are supported by the majority of the Three Rivers Council.
In addition, Halley also made a statement concerning the next provincial election. He made reference to the fact the Minister Deagle will be running in the same district that he is a returning officer for and he hopes that these events will not cause him to act in a “politically incorrect manner”; furthermore, he hopes that the Minister will do a bit of “recanting” before the election which will presumably allow him to act in the proper way.
This seems like a barely veiled threat to Minister Deagle to apologize, ratify the by-laws or face election interference.
Halley has disgraced both himself and Council with such remarks and should be removed from any public positions he currently holds.
